Reaffirming its market-leading position in the UK North Sea ROV inspection market, Fugro has attracted seven new clients for its IRM services.
Recent work includes significant pipeline and structure inspections for Centrica Storage, Chrysaor, Dana, Petrofac, Premier, Repsol and Spirit Energy. Workscopes also include light repair and maintenance and decommissioning, utilising Fugro’s multi-role vessels and broad in-house environmental, geotechnical and geophysical expertise.
This year’s additional contracts join the long-standing ROVSV framework agreements and regular inspection work Fugro carries out for four other UK North Sea operators. The company also performs annual platform asset-based ROV inspections for six clients in the UK and regular North Sea ROVSV pipeline inspections for operators in the Irish, Danish, Dutch and Norwegian continental shelves.

Companies with an interest in developing innovative subsea technologies are being invited to take part in the second call for a three year initiative which forges R&D partnerships between Scotland and Japan.
Industry body Subsea UK and NSRI, in partnership with Scottish Enterprise has announced the latest call for companies to drive forward R&D between Scotland and Japan, as part of a partnership between Scottish Enterprise and the Nippon Foundation.
The second call for projects follows the success of the first phase of the initiative, which saw Scotland and Japan invest a total of £8.8million into five collaborative R&D projects. Companies can now step forward to be part of the second annual call, which will see up to a total of £15million invested into R&D projects over three years.
Organisations are being asked to get involved by identifying how their offerings meet the needs of the evolving subsea sector under the theme of the ‘Blue Economy’. The call will include the wider underwater industries, focussing on renewables, aquaculture and carbon capture storage. The current market value of the ‘Blue Economy’ is valued at £50billion with Scotland currently achieving £7billion, mainly from oil and gas. The global market is projected to reach £140billion by 2035.
The opportunity exists for Scottish or Japanese companies to lead or partner within a project team. Companies can submit an initial expression of interest via the Subsea UK website which has a closing date of 15th February 2019.
Successful projects are planned to be announced in September 2019 at Offshore Europe and will see Scottish and Japanese companies join forces to further develop innovative technology.

Partrac were commissioned by Menter Môn, developers of the Morlais Tidal Demonstration Zone Project off the western seaboard of the Isle of Anglesey (Wales), to undertake a detailed geophysical survey as part of a wider site characterisation project.
Tidal energy, no longer a nascent industry with developments now providing electricity to the grid in Northern Ireland and in the north of Scotland, is growing. New developments in the English Channel, the Bay of Fundy in Canada and at international sites in places as far flung as Indonesia, are being developed. Characterisation of the physical environment is critical to developers to minimise project build risks, facilitate engineering design and gain consent.
Successfully managing the complexities of tide and weather for the Client, Partrac delivered detailed multi-beam echo-sounder, side scan sonar, magnetometer and single channel seismic hydrographic and geophysical survey datasets of the Morlais Project, an area of approximately 70 km2.

Leading ROV and hydrographic survey company, Rovco, has been awarded further funding to develop the next stage of its integrated live 3D vision and artificial intelligence (AI) survey technology. This brings the combined total in technology grants for the UK subsea services company to £1.46 million.
The funding has been awarded by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency. The next stage, AUV3D Phase 2 continues from the successful Phase 1 project and trials proving the technology at the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult’s test centre.
In collaboration with ORE Catapult and ScottishPower Renewables, the funding will support additional research into the cutting-edge 3D vision technology by applying machine learning and AI based analysis to 3D survey and cable burial data.
During the 18-month project, Rovco aims to achieve live transmission of 3D subsea models to shore. As the project progresses Rovco will also commercialise its proven technology, bringing pioneering subsea survey technology to market in live 3D computer vision.
Rovco predicts the integrated technology, which utilises advanced computer vision and AI systems with ROV platforms, could transform the way offshore inspections are carried out and reduce costs by millions each year.

After a long partnership with SHOM – the French Service hydrographique et océanographique de la marine – the King of Morocco has commissioned a new hydrographic vessel for the Royal Moroccan Navy. The new DAR AL BAIDA launched from Concarneau, France late last year is a 72 m hydro-oceanographic and multi-mission vessel.
The romantically named DAR AL BAIDA meaning Casablanca does not necessarily portray its scientific purpose. This research vessel will be focusing on mapping Morocco’s Exclusive Expansion Zone (EEZ) – an area of up to 200 nautical miles off the coast of Morocco to be explored and utilised for marine resources including energy production from water and wind, as outlined by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Working in close cooperation with Kongsberg Maritime, MacArtney France were involved from the early stages of the tender process to provide a fully integrated oceanographic and hydrographic sensor package for the main vessel and two launches.

Swathe Services are delighted to announce a new bespoke custom Peli-case product which has been designed to fit the surface components of an R2SONIC Multi-Beam Echo-Sounder (MBES) SIM box and Inertial Navigation System. This product is specifically designed for use in open boats such as ABP Humber’s 5 metre RIB.
The Peli-case incorporates all the required bulkhead connectors for external cable fittings; an inverter for operating off a DC battery power and a shrouded cooling system. As part of this small boat solution, ABP Humber also purchased a bespoke designed and built transom transducer mount for the SONIC series of sonars. This innovative creation by C4R Systems, a supplier of Swathe Services, carried a SONIC 2024 SONAR, I2NS and Valeport MiniSVS.
This purchase follows the delivery of a second R2Sonic 2024 Multi-Beam Echo-Sounder with Integrated Inertial Navigation System (I2NS) earlier in the year.

McLane Research Laboratories, Inc. announces a new a 7,000m (23,000ft) deep option for WTS-LV samplers. The WTS-LV Deep option is available on the Standard, Dual Filter, and High Capacity WTS-LV models. Existing WTS-LV systems can also be retrofitted with the new deep housing option.
WTS-LV samplers with new 7,000m deep housings were deployed as the deepest two pumps on every cast during the recent U.S. GEOTRACES GP15 cruise. WTS-LV samplers with dual Vertical Intake filter holders are specified by the GEOTRACES program, a global effort to better understand the world’s oceans through their trace elements. Cruise GP15 was the first meridional section of GEOTRACES through the Pacific Ocean between Alaska and Tahiti.
WTS-LV samplers collect a single water sample onto 142mm filter media. The Dual Filter model features separately metered, modular 142mm vertical intake filter holders for parallel filtration. In addition to the new Deep feature, other options for this single event sampler include 4L/min, 8L/min or 30L/min pump heads, 3-tier filter holder for an additional level of pre-filtering, 293mm filter holder, cartridge filter holder, or vertical intake filter holder.

The International Marine Contractors Association’s (IMCA) Annual Seminar was enthusiastically greeted by delegates in a packed theatre at The World Forum in The Hague last week. Nearly 300 managers and executives from across the globe attended the two-day sell-out Seminar with its theme ‘Working together – getting back to business: Oil companies and contractors finding new ways of working’.
The Seminar brought together an impressive line-up of speakers with senior executives from operating companies BP, Equinor, Neptune Energy and Shell; leading contractors in the industry, including Allseas, McDermott, and Subsea 7; and speakers from world-leading management consultants Bain & Company and Boston Consulting Group.
The Seminar was opened by IMCA’s President, Iain Grainger of McDermott. He spoke of current trends and challenges, of the need for collaboration between oil companies and contractors; and the need to be competitive against onshore shale.
Speaking of the transformation within the industry, he highlighted how IMCA has become leaner, fitter, retained its strong membership base and is moving quickly forward towards its ambition to be a high-profile influencer and shaper of the marine energy sector.
This ambition was also central to IMCA’s CEO Allen Leatt’s update on the Association’s activities, and its new strategic themes of digitalisation, environmental sustainability and standardisation.

Objectives of the CWTMA Workshop are to provide the ocean community with a forum for technical information exchange and to promote coordination among those concerned with measuring current, waves and turbulence. Our goal is to ensure that the CWTMA Workshop remains the “go-to” forum for people who need to know how to measure ocean motions and how to translate those measurements into meaningful information.
SCOPE – Development of sensors for measuring currents, waves, turbulence; use of these sensors to study transport, coastal erosion, wave climate, and currents that affect marine operations. New technologies to make flow and wave observations such as radar remote sensing, correlation sonar, drifters, and satellite observation are included.
KEYWORDS – Current measurement, surface waves, turbulence, ocean instrumentation.
TOPIC AREAS – For the 2019 workshop we are soliciting the submission of papers on topic areas that address emerging technologies or issues of timely interest to the oceanographic community, including:
Direct Measurements of Currents, Waves, and Turbulence
Indirect Current and Wave Measurement Techniques
Measurement Platforms and Applications
We also continue to encourage technical papers on Currents, Waves, Turbulence Measurement and Applications topics traditionally covered in previous CWTM workshops.

Manage the installation and commissioning of integrated multibeam survey systems, involving:
Sensor integration design.

Assigned to the 24/7 after-hours support hot lines on a rotational basis.

The position is expected to include between 120 and 150 travel days per year.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills:
Degree level qualification in a hydrographic survey related discipline. (Cat A or similar)
Multibeam surveying experience in the hydrographic industry at a minimum of 3 to 5 years.
In depth knowledge of at least one of the leading hydrographic software packages for multibeam survey.
Experience installing and configuring hydrographic equipment and software is an advantage
Excellent communication and customer liaison skills, both written and oral.
Experienced speaking effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organisation in presentations, training and Q&A seminar.
Self-motivated, and able to work independently.
Ability to work internationally in a team environment and build relationships with internal and external partners.
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
