Polish Navy upgrades rescue vessel with Teledyne RESON SeaBat multibeam sonar

Teledyne RESON is proud to have been selected as provider of a high resolution multibeam system to the Polish Navy.

Teledyne RESON has delivered the market-leading SeaBat T50-R multibeam sonar system. The system is currently being installed in the hull of the rescue vessel ORP Piast at the Nauta Shipyard in Gdynia.

SENControl has not only been contracted to deliver and install the Teledyne RESON SeaBat T50-R sonar system, but also the delivery, installation and integration of a Dynamic Positioning System and a complete 4-point mooring system.

ORP Piast was commissioned to the Polish Navy in 1974 as a multi-role rescue-salvage vessel. In the late 1990s ORP Piast received an extensive refitting and modernisation. ORP Piast is now again undergoing an update at the Nauta Shipyard in Gdynia – including the installation of a SeaBat T50-R.

After the update and commissioning of the new systems, OPR Piast will be operating primarily in the Baltic Sea as a Submarine Support and Rescue Vessel and, with the new sonar system installed, will also boast seabed mapping capability.

ICTINEU and Triton produce first lithium polymer battery module designed for use at full ocean depth

ICTINEU Submarins, the Barcelona based builders of deep sea manned submersibles–who continue the pioneering spirit of the historic Ictineo submarine of 1859– have announced, in conjunction with Triton Submarines, the successful development of the first battery module certified for operation at full ocean depth.

The new unit, a pressure-compensated Lithium-polymer battery module producing 148V DC, 10,36kWh was developed within a partnership to further progress ICTINEU’s existing 6,700m-rated power unit to one capable of diving to any depth, from shallow to full ocean depth.

The announcement highlights the remarkable expertise and 400-years of combined intellectual capital the companies possess in designing, engineering, manufacturing, operating and piloting a wide range of manned submersibles. While the battery’s fabrication method and full specifications are currently closely guarded to protect the proprietary rights, ICTINEU and Triton report the unit is currently undergoing DNV-GL Type-Approval, in addition to the ICTINEU Submarins extensive validation program. Named ITHACA (Ictineu-Triton Hadal Ambient-Compensated Accumulator), the module is a maintenance-free, 4,000 cycle capable plug-and-play battery, ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety in design, manufacturing and performance. Full production of ITHACA is on schedule for the coming months with the first units being available to the market in the summer of 2018.

DataBank Handheld Datalogger now includes Internal GPS

Turner Designs’ Databank Handheld Datalogger is upgraded to include an internal GPS chipset allowing users to log GPS coordinates along with measurement data for location tracking.  Using GPS & GLONASS Global Navigation Satellite System, DataBank provides horizontal position accuracy of 2.5 meters.  DataBank stores up to 9,999 records as well as 16 calibrations and uses an intuitive GUI interface for configuring and calibrating Cyclops sensors; logged data are downloaded via USB.  DataBank’s internal rechargeable battery provides continuous measurements up to 15 hours or continuous GPS data collection up to 5 hours.

University of Vienna acquires multibeam solution from MacArtney

A project to create 3D models of pile dwellings in Austrian lakes thousands of years ago has resulted in the acquisition by the University of Vienna of a multibeam solution supplied by MacArtney.

The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology is a research institute dedicated to the development of new techniques and methodological concepts for landscape archaeology. Its research programme combines geophysics, aerial imaging, computer science and geomatics to develop efficient and universally applicable approaches for non-destructive detection, documentation, visualisation, analysis and interpretation of archaeological landscapes.

Prior to placing the order for multibeam equipment, scientists of the Institute were attending a demonstration introducing them to the products in question and to their properties and features. The presenters were hydrographers from MacArtney’s German subsidiary who actually did the installations and preparations for the equipment.

The overall purpose of the multibeam solution is to create 3D model areas of former – now completely sub-merged – pile dwellings in Austrian lakes in order to document how some of our ancestors lived 5,000 years ago.

New research is testing scour effects on offshore substation jackets

Offshore wind farms are getting bigger, and are increasingly being located further offshore in deeper waters, creating new challenges for their design, maintenance and operation. Key to their successful operation is the offshore substation, the gateway for the transport of energy to the mainland via undersea cables. New research being carried out by the University of Rostock and HR Wallingford is assessing the development of scour around substation jacket foundations to provide new insights for the University of Rostock in research funded by the German government.

As the hub of an offshore wind farm’s energy export, connecting each individual wind turbine to the grid, the stability and integrity of the substation jacket and its cables is vital to successful windfarm operation.  Failure or damage to the substation could mean lost transmission for the entire wind farm, with repair costs and loss of revenue running to tens of millions of euros.  Physical model tests allow for the effects of scour to be accurately assessed under realistic conditions in the laboratory, which can be used to inform and optimise jacket design.

In addition, the BDM will manage existing clients, ensuring they are satisfied whilst maintaining ongoing relationships, seeking referrals and new business opportunities. Face to face meetings requiring presentations on solutions and services that meet needs or predict future requirements is a key part of the role.

There will also be industry events, conferences and seminars to attend and present at.

Horizon Geosciences have a vacancy for a Senior Project Manager within the Survey Division.

The Senior Project Manager will be responsible for the supervision and management of specific projects assigned by the Projects Director. Responsible for all communications with Clients (commercial and contractual), directing the Party Chief/Team Leader, OPM or senior field staff, to ensure that projects are conducted Safely, within budget, in accordance with procedures to the contract specifications, and that the Company’s Integrated Management System is followed.

Responsibility and Principle Activity:

Provide assistance to the Projects Director in project organisation and allocation of project resources.

Correspond with clients on contractual and commercial matters.

Ensure project procedures are suitable and meet the requirements of the specific project.

Conduct project briefings to the survey teams including technical and HSE specific requirements.

Ensure field staff follows emergency procedures.

Ensure field staff report accidents / incidents.

Ensure projects meet the contract specifications within time frames.

Regularly contact and update clients with the project progress.

Monitor the performance of the projects and provide project costs and revenue information.

If required, initiate, check and submit contract variations.

Review and approve all project reporting and charting

Monitor field expenses and create project related invoices.

Track project related expenses and report internally on a monthly basis.

Line Management and development responsibility of a team of Assistant Project Manager’s.

Desired Requirements:

B.Sc. or Engineering Level in Hydrographic Surveying or related discipline.

Minimum of three years’ experience in Project management.

Familiar with the services and equipment used.

Familiar with basic accounting principles.

Fluent written and spoken English Language.

Computer literate (MS Office applications, MS Projects).
