Teledyne TSS launches the HydroPACT 660 Pipe Tracker and HydroPACT 440 24VDC Upgrade Kit

Teledyne TSS, a division of Teledyne Marine, announces the expansion of its market leading range of subsea pipe and cable detection and tracking products with the launch of the new smaller HydroPACT 660 pipe tracking system. The 660 has been designed to help reduce the cost of subsea pipe surveys by allowing the use of smaller classes of underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). In addition, TSS is also expanding the capabilities of its larger HydroPACT 440 pipe tracking system by introducing a new 24VDC upgrade kit.

The new, compact HydroPACT 660 sports a single small form factor coil array measuring 1,200mm x 600mm at a weight of only 15.8kg that offers an operating range of greater than 85% of that of the significantly larger HydroPACT 440 system. This smaller and lighter coil array suits smaller ROVs such as observation class or inspection class. Use of these smaller ROVs for pipe and cable surveys offers customers the opportunity to significantly reduce their operating costs on future projects.

Teledyne TSS is also pleased to announce a new 24VDC power supply pod for the HydroPACT440 system. This is the first time that a 24VDC option for the 440 has been offered, and it will help to increase the flexibility and use of the system on vehicles that only support DC power capability. This new power option is being offered in either 3,000m or 6,000m rated pods for both new 440 systems and as an upgrade kit for existing installations. This offers customers the choice of either 110VAC, 240VAC and 24VDC options for their tracking system.

Kreuz Subsea wins major contract to support L&T and ONGC in India

Kreuz Subsea, a leading global integrated subsea services business, has announced it has been awarded its most financially significant contract in the company’s history. It will see the independent firm mobilise five vessels to deliver subsea completion works for Indian multi-national conglomerate, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) from the start of 2018.

The contract, which is worth an undisclosed eight-figure sum, will see Kreuz Subsea supporting L&T to install all riser clamps, risers, crossing works, tie-ins, subsea trenching and hydro-testing of pipelines which are part of the Oil & Natural Gas Corporation’s (ONGC) Pipeline Replacement Project (PRP4) and Daman Field development projects off the west coast of India.

The five vessels to be utilised throughout the campaign in the Mumbai High and Daman fields in the Mumbai Offshore region, include the DP2 purpose-built SURF vessel, Kreuz Installer, and the diving support and construction work barge, Kreuz Supporter.

In November, Kreuz Subsea bolstered its senior management team with the appointment of Phil Bradbury as QHSE director. BMT and MSI in joint Alexandroupolis FSRU Terminal Project Award

BMT and Metocean Services International (MSI) have been jointly awarded a contract by Gastrade to deploy an Environmental Monitoring System (EMS) and develop metocean criteria to be utilised for the design of the offshore moored FSRU and the subsea pipeline to shore.

The Alexandroupolis FSRU will be located offshore Greece in the northern Aegean Sea in approximately 40m water depth and will connect to shore via a 24km subsea pipeline. The FSRU is part of the Alexandroupolis Independent Natural Gas System which aims to create a new natural gas gateway to central and south-eastern Europe.

MSI will provide a site-specific measurement program to record metocean parameters including waves, currents, water levels and temperature offshore, as well as meteorological parameters onshore for a period of 12 months.

BMT will deliver the metocean criteria study to support the engineering design phase and will use its in-house, long-term wave hindcast and hydrodynamic modelling software TUFLOW-FV, to simulate local sea states and hydrodynamic conditions. TUFLOW-FV is a 2D/3D finite volume numerical model that simulates hydrodynamic, sediment transport and water quality processes.

New tool for shallow water bathymetry

Unabara’s Hydro-2F™ Multi-Frequency Synthetic Beam Bathymetric & Sea Floor Sonar provides both 200 Khz. precision bathymetry and narrow beam low frequency bathymetry.  Particularly suited for shallow waters, the user may field select a low acoustic frequency of 30, 28, 24, 18, 12, or 10 Khz.. As a supplement to the bathymetric data, the Hydro-2F™ provides acoustic backscatter data from the sea floor for Bottom Contrasting™ differences in sediment types.

With all electronics and transducer elements housed in a single below surface unit (BSU), the Hydro-2F interfaces directly with the user’s Windows-based PC.  The user then utilizes his existing hydrographic mapping software; or Unabara can provide seamless integration to Hydromagic ™ survey software (by Eye4Software of The Netherlands).  This integrated package provides for not only dual frequency derived depth data, overlaid with GPS position and satellite photographs but also generates an augmented reality video and paper chart.  Sediment characteristics can be included on the resulting map presentations.

Exciting new shuttle tanker concept with Wärtsilä solutions creates optimal economic and environmental performance

A new shuttle tanker concept developed by the world’s largest provider of shuttle tanker services; TEEKAY, in close cooperation with Wärtsilä, will offer a new level of ecological and economic solutions by using Wärtsilä’s smart technology in innovative ways. The concept has been endorsed with orders for four of these ‘next generation’ vessels for TEEKAY. The ships will be built at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) yard in South Korea and will feature a very broad assortment of Wärtsilä’s latest technology innovations, all of which are central to the concept’s overall performance gains. These orders with Wärtsilä, worth in total over 110MEUR, were booked in December 2017 and January 2018.

The concept offers a new level of economic and ecological performance, and is expected to reduce annual emissions of CO2 equivalents by more than 40 percent, compared to conventional shuttle tankers. In addition to operating on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as the primary fuel, the dual-fuel engines will also be able to run on a mixture of LNG and recovered Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) – the gas evaporating from the oil cargo tanks during loading.

By utilising the recovered VOC as fuel rather than venting it to the atmosphere, the harmful emissions will be eliminated and the ships’ bunker needs will be significantly reduced. The concept also means that Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions from the engines’ exhaust will be reduced by more than 80 percent, Sulphur Oxide (SOx) emissions will be almost entirely eliminated, while particulate emissions will be reduced by more than 95 percent. These environmental benefits are matched by equally important economic advantages, with a significant reduction in fuel consumption compared to conventional solutions.

Wärtsilä solutions are at the heart of this concept. Among the many innovative features is the Wärtsilä Hybrid system, on which the power distribution will be based. The Hybrid system uses batteries for fuel savings, peak load shaving, and added overall system redundancy. This directly impacts the main machinery, resulting in fewer running hours with correspondingly lower maintenance time and costs.

Subsea NE appoints leading industry figure as Regional Chairman

The regional advocacy group for the North-east of England’s subsea sector has appointed Bruce Heppenstall as its new chairman.

Heppenstall will take over the reins of Subsea North East from Andrew Hodgson to further strengthen the organisation’s position as a leading authority across the industry.

CEO of BEL Valves and former general manager for the GE Oil & Gas Wellstream division, Heppenstall will be tasked with promoting the North-east sector on a global scale to maximise opportunities, while working with Subsea UK, the national industry body to provide a forum for collaboration, diversification and technology development.

With the region’s subsea sector generating more than £1.5bn a year and accounting for 20% of manufacturing jobs, he will ensure the region is represented as a world class centre for offshore technologies and solutions on the national stage.

With subsea and offshore engineering recognised as one of four smart specialism areas within the North-east Strategic Economic Plan (SEP), Subsea North East, under Mr Heppenstall’s leadership, will focus on the development of professional engineering and technician skills among the next generation.
