MMT starts offshore geophysical survey for AQUIND Interconnector

MMT has commenced an offshore geophysical survey for the AQUIND Interconnector project. The works will involve a geophysical survey of the proposed cable corridor between the landfall areas near Portsmouth in England and near Dieppe in France.

MMT will utilise two vessels: M/V Franklin for offshore works and M/V Seabeam for nearshore works. The vessels are equipped with latest state-of-the-art survey technology including multibeam echo sounders, side-scan sonars and sub-bottom profilers.

AQUIND, MMT and their representatives maintain ongoing contact with UK and French fisheries, which may be affected by the survey, in order to mitigate any potential impact on their fishing activities.

The survey results will inform AQUIND’s final route selection and support planning applications to the UK and French authorities. AQUIND and its advisors are liaising with relevant consent granting bodies in both countries to ensure that the survey scope complies with applicable standards.

SMD helps major international underwater mining R&D project move a step closer to reality

SMD helps major international underwater mining R&D project move a step closer to reality

UK-based subsea engineering specialist Soil Machine Dynamics Ltd (SMD) has successfully completed first stage testing in a pioneering project which is set to uncover valuable European mineral resources.

 

SMD is technical lead on the VAMOS (viable alternative mine operating system) project, a 42-month international research and development venture, which is part-funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

At a cost of approximately 12.6 million Euros, SMD and its partners in the VAMOS Consortium, have designed and built a robotic underwater mining prototype with launch and recovery technology to perform field tests at four EU mining sites.

During November the system will be demobilised and prepared for transport from the UK to the second test site in Bosnia and Herzegovina in spring 2018.

The VAMOS project launched in March 2016. The consortium includes 16 members from nine EU countries.

CGG announces availability of over 35,000 sq km of broadband high-resolution images across the Northern Viking Graben

CGG announced today delivery of the final time-processed data from its Northern Viking Graben multi-client 3D BroadSeis™-BroadSource™ survey. This new product offers exploration companies over 35,000 sq. km of state-of-the-art subsurface images across the Norwegian Northern North Sea.

The Northern Viking Graben survey was acquired from 2014-2016 after receiving strong industry support in this area of high exploration activity. This vast new broadband seismic data set provides contiguous and uniform coverage over this highly productive area of the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). It offers the industry a powerful tool for further exploration in this mature region, where significant accumulations of hydrocarbons are still being discovered in the established Jurassic plays, and new plays are also emerging, as demonstrated by the Cara discovery last year. High-resolution imaging of the shallow stratigraphy and improved imaging below the Base Cretaceous Unconformity deliver more accurate interpretation of potentially prospective reservoirs at all levels.

Processed with CGG’s latest broadband subsurface imaging technologies, the resulting high-resolution images are state-of-the-art, delivering a structurally continuous “backbone” for CGG’s Northern Viking Graben JumpStart™ geoscience package integrating key geological and geophysical data.

MacArtney - Sea-Bird supply to DHI for water quality monitoring

The world’s busiest artificial waterway, the Kiel Canal, links the North Sea with the Baltic. The canal constitutes the safest, most convenient, shortest and cheapest shipping route between the two seas. Having been enlarged twice already, the Kiel Canal is now subject to a further enlargement which involves a monitoring and modelling project headed by the Danish Hydraulic Institute – Water and Environment (DHI) having ordered the WQMs.

WQMs are designed to deliver core biogeochemical water quality parameters in coastal ecosystems from a single, integrated package. The WQMs incorporate Sea-Bird Scientific’s fluorometer-turbidity and CTD sensors, providing temperature, salinity, depth, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll fluorescence, turbidity and backscattering data.

The WQM sensors have the accuracy and precision to track subtle long-term changes in even the cleanest marine systems. By combining multiple active and passive anti-fouling features, the WQM assures this data quality in coastal and inshore regimes.

Extensive field trials have demonstrated the WQM’s unprecedented long-term stability in biologically rich coastal waters. This is also the case with the WQM instruments delivered to DHI by MacArtney. The instruments have been operating submerged for about 8 weeks presenting very good results. Custom firmware enables an extended deployment period, and four external ECO-PAR™ sensors provide highly accurate measurements of PAR*. The WQM custom firmware enables continuous sampling for up to four hours. This is necessary due to the fact that they are monitoring in an area where clean-up materials are being dumped.

MV Kobi Ruegg joins Fugro’s survey vessel fleet

MV KOBI RUEGG joins Fugro’s survey vessel fleetThe newly named MV Kobi Ruegg has joined Fugro’s vessel fleet and is set to begin her first project in the Egyptian sector of the Mediterranean Sea. Working on behalf of Saipem, Fugro will deploy its large diameter piston core system to collect soil samples in the Zohr gas field; geophysical surveys for Pico and Shell will follow.

The three-year-old vessel has been renamed Kobi Ruegg in honour of a former member of the Board of Management at Fugro and previously operated in the Gulf of Mexico for Fugro. She replaces the Fugro Navigator which has been permanently retired as part of Fugro’s ongoing vessel rationalisation process.

Permanently mobilised with a full range of geophysical survey and geotechnical sampling equipment, as well as a Seaeye Panther remotely operated vehicle, the purpose-built, 58-metre, multi-role survey vessel is based in Alexandria, Egypt. From her new home port of Abu Qir, she will deliver Fugro’s marine site characterisation services to clients in the Eastern Mediterranean and Red Sea.

Köbi (Jakob) Rüegg passed away in March 2017 after an all-too-brief period of retirement. Köbi worked tirelessly for Fugro for almost 20 years, and from 2009 until he retired in 2013 was a member of the Board of Management with responsibility for the Offshore Survey Division. He is remembered as a hardworking, experienced and dedicated colleague with a distinctive style and sense of humour.

Hydro Group Systems secures inaugural US contract

Hydro Group Systems Inc, subsidiary to subsea cable and connector specialist Hydro Group, has announced its inaugural contract win in the US, worth an estimated $550,000.

The company has secured a significant contract with the US Navy to supply neutrally-buoyant plow umbilicals for the Military Sealift Command, an organisation which is responsible for providing sealift and ocean transportation for all US military services. The agreement was designed to meet all client manufacture and performance requirements.

Hydro Group Systems has also bolstered its credentials in the region, expanding its footprint and workforce. This includes the launch of its manufacturing facility in Pinellas County, Florida, in summer 2017, and the appointment of Christopher Scanlon, as senior design engineer. Christopher has over 12 years’ experience working in the harsh environment cable and connector industry and in his new role, he will be focusing on the company’s core markets of defense, oil and gas and renewable energy.

Kraken awarded $750,000 oil & gas contract

Kraken Robotics Inc. announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Kraken Robotic Systems Inc. has been awarded a competitive contract valued at approximately $750,000 for the development of underwater sensors and robotics that will advance digitalisation of integrated operations within Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore oil and gas sector.

Contract funding is being provided by Petroleum Research Newfoundland and Labrador (PRNL), InnovateNL and industry partners. The contract will commence in 4Q17 and conclude in 4Q18.

Under the terms of contract, Kraken will integrate its SeaVision™ 3D laser imaging sensor and underwater robotics technologies with a cloud-based data analytics infrastructure to demonstrate an end-to-end digitalization methodology for subsea asset integrity management. Cloud-based integration, predictive analytics and open-architecture Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) concepts will also be evaluated.

This digitalisation methodology will provide: 1) unprecedented visibility by connecting with subsea assets in a controlled and repeatable process, any time and from any vendor; 2) insights by capturing holistic views of asset condition with predictive-based maintenance; and 3) optimized asset performance by balancing reliability, performance and cost when defining maintenance strategies across operations.

The two key goals of the project are a) demonstration and evaluation of a substantially improved process for data collection, analysis and predictive analytics for oil-field Inspection, Maintenance and Repair and b) demonstration of a next generation 3D subsea imaging / asset inspection solution that generates millimetre resolution data.

Well-Safe solutions secures its first contract

Well-SENSE Technology wins prestigious ICoTA innovation award

Well-SENSE Technology has been awarded the Intervention and Coiled Tubing Association (ICoTA) Europe’s Innovation Award in recognition of its innovative FibreLine Intervention (FLI) technology.

The award was presented on the first day of the SPE ICoTA European Well Intervention Conference at the AECC, Aberdeen.

FLI presents an entirely new approach to well intervention for data profiling, using a bare, disposable fibre optic line for distributed temperature and acoustic sensing. The fibre is dropped through the vertical section of a well using an innovative deployment tool and delivers real-time measurements, over its full length, for an extended period of time.

FLI differs from traditional fibre line measurement devices as it is run into the well as bare line instead of encased within an intervention media such as wireline. Once it is run and has delivered the necessary data it is disposed of into the well. FLI is the world’s only disposable fibre line intervention method on the market and provides huge time, space and cost savings. It can be deployed within a couple of hours of arriving on site and removes the need for complicated rig up and rig down procedures, the footprint taken up by spools of wireline and lubricators, additional personnel and associated non-productive time.

Chris Rodricks has been appointed in a business development role for the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) in their Middle East and India Region.

Greensea appoints new account executive

Greensea, creator of OPENSEATM, the universal marine industry operating platform, has recently announced the appointment of Karl Lander as account executive. Prior to joining Greensea, Karl spent two decades with the United States Coast Guard. Most recently, he was the executive officer aboard the USCGC Healy, where he was responsible for the internal operations of an 85-member crew and managed a 137-member cross-functional team during a 64-day scientific expedition to the North Pole.

Karl earned a M.S. in Engineering and Technology Management from Portland State University in Oregon, and a B.S. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He is a Certified Surface Supplied and SCUBA Diver with experience in military and scientific expeditions.
