Kommandoren, Hays Ships
Stand: J2
The Kommandoren is 120 years old this year. She was built as a small sailing cargo vessel in Karrebaeksminde in Denmark in 1891. She carried about 100tons of cargo all over the Baltic and Northern Europe. She did not get an engine until the first world war and was sailed with a Captain a man and a boy as standard crew so it must have been a hard life. The ship was bought and saved by Erik Hays Thogersen the founder of Hays ships in 1971 when she was being used to dredge up stones for the construction industry. He converted her into the layout we see today including the traditional Galeas rig which allows her to set a large loose footed square sail. She was originally used to promote Danish interests and companies around Europe. Since 1980 she has been used as the symbol of Hays Ships Ltd and is pressed into service as a mobile office when required. Please visit the Hays Ships stand (J2) to pick up a copy of the schedule of demonstrations and to book your place.
